What should I do with my free time?

“Lots of people are still very worried about catching COVID and are spending a lot of time at home. Even young people remain isolated and don't really know what they should do with their time,” says Michaela Fischer.

Even in pandemic-free times, sometimes you are just racked with boredom and don’t know what you should do all day long.

“No matter how old they are, if your child is playing with their phone or computer without interruption, offer them alternatives.”

The counsellor has the following advice for parents if the children and young people refuse: “Sit down with them. Take an interest in what your child is doing. Ask them questions about it, but stay in contact. Talk to your children. The discussion might lead to some interests becoming apparent.”

If it’s for an adult or even for you yourself, Fischer recommends structuring the day first of all. When am I going to do what? You could also think about things you’ve always wanted to do one day, like learn a language or take up a new sport. “Ask yourself what you used to like to do or what you liked to do when you were a kid! Think of the fact that you now have time as an opportunity.”

If you aren't able to think of very much, talking to an old friend could be helpful: “they may be able to remember things you used to like doing that you could start doing again.”

Lots of people like doing something meaningful with their free time. This could be helping out at a charity or working on other social projects.

If you want to talk to a professional about your leisure time, you are welcome to arrange an appointment at one of the numerous Austrian Family counselling centres.
