Bürosituation mit Team

Working in Teams is difficult for me

Some people struggle with Teams, the Microsoft communication program, both privately and professionally.

“The problem primarily lies in the fact that working in teams means giving up autonomy and control,” says Teresa Promitzer. Lots of it is to do with the family background. “If you experience decisions being made and your own opinion not counting as a child and young person, it can lead to a loss of identity.” Later, this can result in rebellion and uncertainty surrounding your opinion counting less.

As a first step to dealing with this, the expert recommends accepting yourself: “take responsibility for yourself and take your emotions out of it as much as you can.” You could ask yourself, for example, what is it about exactly? With which internal values does working in teams clash for me? How can I become more capable of acting again?

This is easier in a professional environment because there are hierarchies and you are often obliged to adapt to processes, including in groups. However, if you still notice that you feel uncomfortable in a given team situation, Promitzer recommends taking breaks and communicating this. In relationships, the counsellor says it is important to communicate the need to be seen and heard, and to realise that we are always in interdependent relationships: nobody can get by without other people.

For parents, it is important to “listen to your child’s needs and take them seriously – then it will be easier for them in later life, and not just in matters like this.”
